Have you seen the crazy Super Cub videos of bush pilots landing in river beds, on the SIDE of hills or taking off in just a few feet? The Highlander from Just Aircraft in South Carolina is all that and more!
It's like the ATV of aircraft:

They also have a SuperStol version with automatic slats on the front of the wings:

Here are a few build pictures to help you along the way!

Thank you to Tom Monton and Jim Palmer for doing some test work for us. You guys were instrumental in helping us get the last minute mods done!

I've been wanting a decent scratch build STOL like forever. I could buy the cub...or the tundra (if it's ever in stock again) but don't care for the, if it breaks you order parts aspect.

A scratch build comes with all the spare parts you could ask for ... well sorta

I didn't care for the FT version and have since been patently waiting for someone to push through with a 6mm design and so to why my first comment ... " bring it".

Is the wing flat or built-up? Can't tell from the pics.

Good idea, I wanted to build one myself.

    Thanks and cheers.

This prototype is a flat wing, but I did one with an airfoil and flaps/slats. The flaps/slats idea still needs a lot of experimentation, but as you see, on a plane this size and with this wing loading, the thing just hangs there with a flat wing and flaps!

Yes, we are working on a score and fold airfoil design. this will help both with strength and performance. Untitled.png

We've had this plane for a couple years now and have been tweaking and twerking with it off and on. While Jay was having fun flying the prototype, I was messing around and crashing a lot trying to get slats and flaps to work for a super stol version....

The slats are linked to the flaps and extend forward from the front of the wing. I have cf tubes in the wing and rods in the slat, and the rod slides out of the cf tube. The super Stol wing immediately felt like it was caught in a thermal or something when the slats took effect-a lot of lift. But it actually slowed the plane to the point of stall.
Although it was a neat experiment, I could have been flying instead like Jay was, haha. This plane is already such a slow flier with flaps alone that the flaps and slats are just too much. We feel that the airfoil wing of the highlander will be all that is necessary for some excellent Stol.

The typical 30+'ish inch wing span?

    Love the wheels

  18. Nice scale looking plane Greg...
I think this will also make a good platform for FPV!
    Yes, love the wheels...

Yes, let's give the HK Tundra and the HH Timber some competition at a fraction of their cost.
